Arab Gas Pipeline Ministers Discuss in Cairo its Phases to Reach Europe
Following the joint talks held on 7/9/2008, Ministers of Petroleum and Energy, participating in the Arab Gas Pipeline; Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon , agreed upon starting the proceedings of developing and extending the pipeline to be linked with the European gas grid after the completion of the 4 phases of the project, which extends from Egypt to Jordan and then Syria. Gas transportation systems are being implemented, from the Syrian territories to Turkey within the framework of the first Arab regional gas grid to be linked with the European one, contributing to the diversification of energy sources for Europe. The executive status for the arrival of the Egyptian gas to Lebanon via Syria was discussed, in addition to the procedures of supplying Lebanon with its requirements of gas. Eng. Sufian Al-Alaw, Syrian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, said that the Egyptian gas is already reaching Syrian Cities to Hems, and completing the pipeline to Turkish borders is currently under execution. That is besides executing procedures for reviving Kerkouk/ Banias Pipeline for transporting and exporting Iraqi oil through Syrian territories to the Mediterranean Sea. Negotiations are being held for studying linking the gas fields at the west of Iraq to the Arab Gas Pipeline. Eng. Khaldoun Kotaishat, Jordanian Energy Minister, mentioned that they are benefiting from the Egyptian gas in providing energy resources for all utilizations according to quantities and timings agreed upon. Allan Taborian, Lebanese Minister, said that preparations for providing Lebanon with its energy needs, whether Egyptian gas or electricity, are currently underway, which is decided to reach Lebanon before the end of the current year. That's in the framework of Egypt's support to Lebanon's People.
